R.I.P. Guru

Man I can’t believe that this guy is gone. He was such a pioneer and a true artisan of the craft. He wasn’t the most skilled MC by any stretch of the imgination, but his no-nonsense delivery, authoritative style and unquestionable wisdom set his material head and shoulders above all but a few MCs to have ever spit a rhyme. LEGENDARY. Without a doubt a top 10 all-time MC.

Life is crazy man… until we are all One.

I have no doubt that you now reside in the location that you speak of on this classic track of yours:

Just a few of my all-time favorite joints:

One day I’d like to compile my own mixtape featuring material of this superior grade so that I could sell it online to people my age who appreciate this brand of hip hop. I feel that I could put together 30 or so tracks that are all this bangin’, peppered with a few tracks like Cormega’s “Therapy” for some lighter introspection that still has a rugged edge. I love this type of music. This type of stuff is like hip hop on steroids and HGH.

And this next bit is not music related but we can all excuse that because she’s so fucking beautiful, my favorite athlete Leryn Franco:

Baby I do miss your raven maned, pouty lipped, café skinned, almond eyed, perfect figure-having self, but I’ll be back by your side soon enough to put some babies up in you! Love you my Inca princess! *MUAH* I love you sweetheart! :P

Goddamn I need to move to South America where more chicks look like her.

And I’m out.

Deltron3030

02/18/2010

Del a.k.a. Del tha Funkee Homosapien a.k.a. Deltron3030 has long been one of the most creative artists in music (not merely hip hop but music period) and many of his tracks have not lost any of their original edge with time. His 2000 concept album titled Deltron3030 (which was actually a self-titled album since he assumed the Deltron3030 persona on it) explored his vision of humanity in the year 3030 and was released at a time when many feared a post-apocalyptic future as we were making the dubious transition into a new millenium.

Ten years later, my favorite track off of the album still sounds fresh in both the literal and slang sense of the word. With his inimitable charm, wit and comical yet powerful and controlled delivery, Del cogently captures the vibe of a dystopian future on a completely computer-reliant and vulnerable Earth on which he is plotting to unleash a global super virus attack in his track titled “Virus.” The song is just jammin’ and is so versatile that it could be played in most corporate workplaces to the dismay of absolutely no one, not even the person in the office who is most in opposition to hip hop music (usually attributed to their lack of exposure to and the mainstream perception of the genre).

In short, Deltron3030′s “Virus” track is the type of song that can completely alter someone’s views on hip hop as far as conceptual creativity and intellectualism goes. An IT nerd who despises hip hop would probably find this track both tolerable and amusing. That’s the beauty of Del, he tends to transcend barriers and preconceived notions with his varied brands of music and creativity. And that’s what it’s really all about. :)

“Global controls will have to be imposed
and a world governing body, will be created to enforce them.
Crises, precipitate change…”
[Del]
Secretly… plotting your demise
I wanna devise a virus
To bring dire straits to your environment
Crush your corporations with a mild touch
Trash your whole computer system and revert you to papyrus
I want to make a super virus
Strong enough to cause blackouts in every single metropolis
Cause they dont wanna unify us
So fuck it total anarchy and can’t nobody stop us
You see late in the evening
Fucked up on my computer and my mind starts roaming
I create like a heathen
The first cycles of this virus I can send through a modem
Infiltration hits your station
No Microsoft or enhanced DOS will impede
Society thinks they’re safe when
Bingo! Hard drive crashes from the rending
A lot of hackers tried viruses before
Vaporize your text like so much white out
I want it where a file replication is a chore
Lights out shut down entire White House
I don’t want just a bug that could be corrected
I’m erecting immaculate design
Break the nation down section by section
Even to the greatest minds it’s impossible to find
[Repeat 2X]
I wanna devise a virus
To bring dire straits to your environment
Crush your corporations with a mild touch
Trash your whole computer system and revert you to papyrus
[Kid Koala scratching:]
“We have already planned…”
“The plan is programmed into every one of my thousand rrrobots…”
“We will not hesitate; we will destroy the homo sapien!”
“Please, stay where you are…”
(Psst ay, I’m makin’ some shit in my basement
Bout to do it to ‘em, don’t tell ‘em though
Alright I love you, peace)
[Del]
I want to develop a super virus
Better by far than that old Y2K
This is 3030 the time of global unification
Break right through they… terminals
Burn ‘em all, slaves to silicon
Corrupt politicians with leaders and their keywords
F.B.I and spies stealin’ bombs
Decapitate their plans in their face and catch the fever
Everybody loot the stores get your canned goods
Even space stations are having a hard time
Peacekeepers seek to take our manhood
Which results in the form of global apartheid
Ghettos are trash dumps with gas pumps
Exploding and burnt out since before the great union
The last punks walk around like masked monks
Ready to manipulate the database or break through ‘em
Human rights come in a hundredth place
Mass production has always been number one
New Earth has become a repugnant place
So it’s time to spread the fear to thunder some
[Kid Koala scratching:]
“Too long have we tried
to extend our glorious empire out to the stars…”
“Only to be driven back…”
[Repeat 2X]
I wanna devise a virus
To bring dire straits to your environment
Crush your corporations with a mild touch
Trash your whole computer system and revert you to papyrus

It still sounds completely relevant doesn’t it? Del never fails to put a grin on my face. :)

BTW Del is also the mind behind the “band” Gorillaz. He is the person who performs the rap verses on their tracks as well. He’s been involved in so many projects and groups going back to the late 80′s though that it’s ridiculous. I think this dude just eats, sleeps and shits conceptual music. Truly a universal MC in every sense of the word.

Finalmente, me gusta este cancion de Reik:

Reik- “Inolvidable”

It’s just some Mexican alternative pop but they have a nice “American” sound and it’s about a “good” breakup (which is rare). This track is over a year old but I still dig it. I know that this ain’t got shit to do with Del, but music is music, lol.

I’m also currently playing this track as I’m editing this entry:

This song never gets old. It seems that he’s detailing a spiritual experience/encounter in a higher plane of existence on this track (which was the title track on his 2003 album). All of his music is pure poetry if you examine the lyrics on a sheet. I love lyrics like that.

Fat Pun. He blew up (as far as his weight goes) after a bad car accident and never looked back. Trans fats murdered this man. It’s a conspiracy- the trans fats had it in for him all along and plotted his demise!

Svelte Pun. Most people are unaware that he was once a regular-sized man.

When hip hop purists and aficionados have their debate regarding who is the greatest MC of all-time, this morbidly obese MC’s name somehow gets lost in the mix and usually omitted from the top five. Well I’m posting this entry to pay homage to the late, great Big Pun (short for Big Punisher) a.k.a. Christopher Rios. Big Pun, who was of Puerto Rican descent and hailed from the Bronx (the birthplace of hip hop),  possessed a rapid-fire delivery, polysyllabic rhyme scheme, nimble-tongued wordplay and raw, gritty lyrical content that all amalgamated to make him one of the sickest MCs to ever touch a microphone. If you’re not that familiar with his work and the only track you’ve ever heard of his was the mainstream radio jam “Still Not a Player” featuring Joe, you’re missing out big time.

If you indulge in hip hop in the least and have an overall respect for the craft, then please click on the tracks that I have linked to this entry. Had he not passed away from a massive heart attack 10 years ago, he very well may have evolved into the greatest MC of all-time with little debate. His schtick was his alarming lyrical prowess and the fact that his slick, smooth delivery was usually delivered as a constant climax on the track. It didn’t have a buildup or a crescendo, he just flat out destroyed tracks from the moment he spoke his first word on them; artistically and metaphorically he was akin to a T-Rex sinking his razor-sharp fangs into soft flesh (the beat) while maintaining a steady chomp rhythm (his wicked flow and delivery).

The man simply had the most monstrous flow I have ever heard, and I have sampled almost every top-tier MC’s material. I seriously doubt that Eminem- or any MC on the face of the planet for that matter-  could go toe to toe and hold their own with this man had he not stuffed himself into an early grave. I just had to pay my respects to Big Pun and his hard-as-an-anvil-yet-smooth-as-silk total domination flow. Dude was a beast, no doubt, but just doesn’t get enough credit for whatever reasons. Big Pun: both literally and figuratively larger than life.

Also, I’m diggin’ this new Jay-Z track produced by Swizz Beatz:

Even the video is throwed with its imagery.
